Wegovy Hair Loss

Wegovy Hair Loss: Why It Happens and What to Do

Some people taking Wegovy notice increased hair shedding a few months into treatment. In clinical trials, hair loss was reported by around 3% of participants taking semaglutide for weight management, compared to roughly 1% on placebo. The reassuring part is that it is almost always temporary. Here is what is behind it.

Key Facts

  • Around 3% of Wegovy users reported hair loss in trials, versus 1% on placebo
  • It is caused by rapid weight loss, not by semaglutide acting on the hair directly
  • Shedding starts 2–4 months in and is almost always temporary
  • Protein and key nutrients are the most actionable levers to support recovery

Does Wegovy Cause Hair Loss Directly?

No. Semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, does not damage hair follicles. The hair loss reported by users is a condition called telogen effluvium, triggered by the physiological stress of rapid weight loss rather than by the drug itself.

This is the same mechanism behind hair loss on other GLP-1 medications and behind hair loss from any form of rapid weight loss. We cover the biology in more detail in our guide to hair loss when losing weight, but the short version is this: significant physical stress pushes a larger than normal proportion of hair follicles into their resting phase at the same time, causing diffuse shedding across the scalp a few months later.

Crucially, the follicles are not destroyed. They remain capable of regrowth.

Why Wegovy Specifically?

Two factors make hair loss more likely on Wegovy than on slower weight loss methods.

⚡ Speed of weight loss

Wegovy produces significant weight loss in a relatively short window. The faster the loss, the greater the physiological stress, and the more likely follicles are to enter the resting phase early.

🥗 Reduced nutrient intake

Appetite suppression means eating less, which lowers intake of iron, zinc, B12 and protein — all essential for hair growth. When nutrients are scarce, the body deprioritises hair.

How Long Does It Last?

Wegovy hair loss is self-limiting in most cases. Shedding typically begins 2 to 4 months after significant weight loss starts, peaks, then resolves within 3 to 6 months once weight stabilises and the body adjusts. Full density recovery can take 6 to 12 months.

If shedding is severe or continues beyond six months, it is worth seeing a GP to rule out other causes such as iron deficiency, thyroid dysfunction or pattern hair loss, which need different treatment.

What You Can Do About It

Because the follicles are intact, supporting the body is what matters. The most effective levers are nutritional.

Prioritise protein. Hair is made of keratin. Aim for 1.2 to 1.6g of protein per kilogram of body weight daily, which also helps preserve muscle during weight loss.

Address nutrient gaps. Iron, vitamin D, B12 and zinc are the nutrients most directly tied to hair health, and the most likely to fall short when you are eating less on Wegovy.

Slow the pace if you can. Discussing titration with your prescribing clinician may help if hair loss is significant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hair loss a side effect of Wegovy?
Hair loss was reported by around 3% of participants taking semaglutide for weight management in clinical trials, compared to roughly 1% on placebo. It is listed as a known side effect, though it affects a minority of users.
Will my hair grow back after Wegovy hair loss?
Yes, in the vast majority of cases. The hair loss is telogen effluvium, a temporary form of shedding that does not damage the follicles. Regrowth typically begins within a few months once weight loss stabilises and nutrition improves.
When does Wegovy hair loss start?
Shedding typically begins 2 to 4 months after significant weight loss starts. Because of this delay, many people do not immediately connect the hair loss to their treatment.
How do I stop hair loss on Wegovy?
The most actionable steps are ensuring adequate protein intake, addressing nutritional gaps in iron, B12, vitamin D and zinc, and where possible slowing the rate of weight loss. The follicles are not damaged, so supporting the body helps recovery.
